Belbin Team Role (1993)

Belbin Team Roles are used to identify people's behavioural strengths and weaknesses in the workplace. This information can be used to:

  • Build productive working relationships

  • Select and develop high-performing teams

  • Raise self-awareness and personal effectiveness

  • Build mutual trust and understanding

  • Aid recruitment processes

On completing the Belbin questionnaire the result I received was ‘Team worker’. They are people who mainly focused on completing the task on behalf of the team. Also they are described as Co – operative, sensitive and are good listener who build relationships and who dislikes confrontation.

This is well linked as this very much describes the way I work, although when working within a different environment or a larger group than normal it is important not to rely on others ideas but to voice your own opinion on what you feel is right , very much again this links into confidence. I feel over time this is something I have been working on, by contributing in class discussions or taking lead within a group project. Looking back to when I first enrolled on to my course to where I am now, I personally have seen an improvement.

Value to the Team – As a team member I:

  • Help to create and maintain an orderly work environment

  • Consistent and dependable

  • A caring team player who honours my commitments

  • Ensure the focus is realistic

  • Will see a project through to conclusion

  • At times will provide team numeracy, literacy or technical structure

  • Ensure accurate outcomes with my cautious style

  • Encourage accuracy and quality

  • Will encourage the team to think through all the possibilities

  • Carefully assesses situations before acting
